In the textbook section on symbolic interactionism, examples are given of the negative connotations found in American society for the word old. In this discussion I’d like you to make a list of at least 5 adjectives that describe the word “old.” From the symbolic interactionist perspective, how do these definitions communicate our views of the world? Include your perceptions of the age at which you consider someone old, physical descriptions of old people, and the activities you think old people are capable of accomplishing, such as working, practicing physical fitness, dating, or sexual activity.

Furthermore, do you believe the perception of the elderly will change in this country as the baby boom population grows and gains power. What conflicts may this produce in the next 10 to 20 years between older adults and young people?
