Deanza College Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci Discussion

Category: Discussion

What was your opinion of the Mona Lisa before this lesson and has it changed at all since learning more about the painting and the artist?

[TIP: What did you learn about the Mona Lisa in this module that may have changed or reinforced your opinion of the painting?]

What is your opinion on the “hype” surrounding this work?

Have you seen the Mona Lisa in person? If so, what was your reaction?

Example:

Mona Lisa

Being completely transparent and honest, I’m not the biggest art history critique or fan, I love being creative and showing skills but paintings and art history haven’t been my biggest interest. It also depends on the piece and the history behind it if it draws me in. So, before this lesson, I didn’t know anything about Mona Lisa other than being a painting and one of the most famous pieces. I didn’t really have an opinion of the Mona Lisa before this lesson, it’s a beautiful work of art but I didn’t think too much about it other than being the most famous painting people talk about. I learned the painting is located in Paris, it attracts over 60,000 people a year to come view her smile, and it was painted between 1503 and 1505. I also read that the true identity of the lady is unknown.

I’m not an art major and studying styles, techniques, history, etc., and just not being a huge art critique in general, so I’ll be brutally honest with all the discussions and assignments and do my best to connect emotionally or other ways to paintings and works of art. That being said, I personally don’t see the big hype surrounding this work just since I’m not connected to it emotionally. It is a beautiful portrait but it doesn’t do much for me to absolutely want to see it someday. If I do, I do, if I don’t, it’s not going to break my heart.
