Long Beach City College the Rogue Sociologist and Culture Discussions

Discussion: Keep in mind you must answer each discussion forum with a minimum of 200 words. You must also respond to another peer with a minimum of 100 words.

Journal 1 is due Saturday before midnight. I have attached a sample journal that I wrote to help you guide you for this first writing assignment. There are some suggestions for you also on each of the journal assignments. Make sure you edit your work, reference your author, and/or links if you will be using them in your journal. The personal immersion is your ability to connect the sociological imagination/perspective, it’s not an opinion piece.

By now you have read Ch.1 “The Sociological Perspective”, and have been exposed to the birth of Sociology, and the three major Sociological Paradigms we apply. Reflect on Professor Venkatesh’s experience doing participant observation in the Robert Taylor homes (p.29). What do you think are some advantages and disadvantages of participant observation? Apply one concept, and one level of analysis (Functional, Conflict, Symbolic Interactionism).  For your consideration refer to the files section to review a table on the three perspectives for week 1.  or click here: Ch.1TheoreticalPersTable.doc

Click on the link below to hear and watch Dr. Venkatesh explain his findings from the Sociological Cinema

Week 1: Discussion 2, Ch.2 “Culture”

No unread replies.No replies.

In this chapter, we examine what culture is, how culture provides orientations to life, and what practicing cultural relativism means. Examine these questions, as you reflect on your own cultural experiences, through your own standards of beauty, identities (sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender/sex, race, religion, language, etc), and the role our family values, and media also play You may start to realize too, that you don’t fit in a box, but rather your identity is fluid, and it will constantly change.).

—2. Compare U.S. and International cultures (i.e.) (language, gestures, family structure, money, religion, courtship, love, etc?)

—3. Are you a member of any subcultures? Which one(s)? Why do you think that group is a subculture? What is your relationship to the mainstream culture

—4. Apply the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis: What terms do you refer to your race-ethnicity? What “bad”terms or “good” have others used to refer to your race-ethnicity?

a.) In this link, you can read an article, and also watch a short video on language, and identity, but also apply the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis Link (Links to an external site.)

—5. Provide examples of cultural diffusion in the U.S. How has it impacted our culture? Is cultural leveling through cultural diffusion inevitable? What role does technology play? Click below or download slides.
