Discussion: Keep in mind you must answer each discussion forum with a minimum of 200 words. You must also respond to another peer with a minimum of 100 words.

Journal 1 is due Saturday before midnight. I have attached a sample journal that I wrote to help you guide you for this first writing assignment. There are some suggestions for you also on each of the journal assignments. Make sure you edit your work, reference your author, and/or links if you will be using them in your journal. The personal immersion is your ability to connect the sociological imagination/perspective, it’s not an opinion piece.

Reflect on Professor Venkatesh’s experience doing participant observation in the Robert Taylor homes (p.29). What do you think are some advantages and disadvantages of participant observation? In this chapter, we examine what culture is, how culture provides orientations to life, and what practicing cultural relativism means. Examine these questions, as you reflect on your own cultural experiences, through your own standards of beauty, identities (sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender/sex, race, religion, language, etc), and the role our family values, and media also play You may start to realize too, that you don’t fit in a box, but rather your identity is fluid, and it will constantly change.).
