San Diego State University The Door Study & Awareness Test Videos Questions

Let’s consider the following questions:

  • how does the brain process incoming sensory input?
  • how accurate is its representation of the physical reality? (the phenomenon of inattentional or change blindness)
  • what happens when it receives conflicting or ambiguous information?
  • How does the brain construct (“hallucinate”) reality based on the information it gets?

For this assignment (7 pts), you need to do the following:

1.) read the chapter “Can you trust your brain?” by Aamodt and Wang (2008) – here is the lin

2.) read “Fooled by your own brain” by Hughes (2013), available here: https://nautil.us/issue/2/uncertainty/fooled-by-yo… 3.) Watch the “Whodunnit” video, as well as other short videos embedded in the text. Here are additional links:

4. Using between 350 and 450 words, write a short comment in response to the following:

  1. What did you find to be most surprising in the videos/text?
  2. Describe your understanding of the idea that the brain only interprets reality (instead of perceiving it accurately) and why you think this is the case
  3. Describe an example of “change blindness” you may have personally experienced

Better grades will be given to comments with a higher quality of response (i.e. analytical substance), better understanding of the underlying phenomena, more creative answers, and higher overall clarity of thought and better quality of writing.

There are some really cool examples of face perception in the second half of the article (also with embedded links) so I would STRONGLY suggest that you go over those as well as they are directly relevant to the material we will be covering in class.
