Introduction to Social Service Program Planning and Administration

Designing effective programs in human services requires professionals is a systematic process. One of the key steps in getting started with designing a program is researching the social problems in their program’s geographical location. Social problems are complex and often related to other social problems. For example, poverty correlates with many related social problems, such as homelessness, unemployment, and health outcomes. Effective program planning involves a good fit of services to the needs and related social problems in the community.

Please respond to the following:

• Reflect upon what inspired you to enter the field of human services and what social problem you are most passionate about. What is the primary social problem and related social problems?
• What current research exists on the prevalence of the problem in the United States, your state, and if available, in your local region or county?
• Research at least one program related to this social problem. Identify an existing agency or program that currently exists in your local service area that addresses the social problem(s).
• Based on the readings from Chapter 1 of your text, explain how effectiveness-based program planning would benefit any human or social services organization providing services to address the social problem you have identified.
