York St John University Cognitive Dissonance and Self Presentation Discussion
I’m working on a psychology discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
First, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=korGK0yGIDo&t=4s (Links to an external site.)
Then, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqONzcNbzh8 (Links to an external site.)
Please then answer the following questions:
If you were a participant in the first video, do you think you would have seen through the experimental manipulation? Why or why not?
In chapter 6, the book goes over self-motives such as consistency, esteem, presentation and growth. In the 2nd video, which of these self-motives do you think Ash alludes to most? Support your answer.
An important phenomenon of self is self-serving bias. We usually think about ourselves favorably; and therefore tend to accept the credit when things go our way and place credit on others when things do not go our way. Self-presentation is another interesting theory. It emphasizes how an individual modifies his or her mannerism, behavior, appearance, and attitude to create a favorable impression on others. As you have learned, self-presentation varies depending on the culture, but what about the online environment? Online learning, shopping, and personal home Web pages are just a few areas where an individual’s presence is viewed.Explain how would the theory of self-presentation fit in an online (basically global) environment. Explain your views of the effects of culture on self-presentation and if that effect is diminished in an online environment
