Sara wrote In “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” Anderson focuses on showing the reader the character’s interior feelings. The emotional response that I got was somewhat annoyed that everyone allowed themselves to be fooled. The adults were so concerned about how they would look to everyone else that they ended up looking very foolish. Even in the beginning Anderson tells us that the king is worried that only an idiot would not be able to see the cloth and he did not want to look weak so he went along with it. Seeing all the others as well care more about what others thought than actually seeing what was in front of them is what caused me to feel very little sympathy for them when they were made fools of.

“The Little Match Girl,” just made me sad. I believe that this response was brought on by both setting and knowing the girls internal thoughts and feelings. The description of this wintery cold night and having this little girl out there hungry and freezing to death is depressing. Anderson wanted the reader to feel that way. He set the scene to be gloomy. Also knowing the little girl’s thoughts continued on with how sad the scene was set to be. When she thinks she sees her grandmother it deepens the reader’s sympathy towards the little girl because you know she is dying.

For “The Brave Tin Soldier,” I immediately recognized it as an early Toy Story. Later on it reminded me of Romeo and Juliet, and how they decided to die together. I had conflicting emotional responses to this one. It was a sad story because they died, but they did find each other so in some ways their goal was accomplished. The story was not sad in the same way that “Little Match Girl” was. Anderson used the tin soldier’s internal thoughts to help let the reader identify more with him and then evoke an emotional response. Knowing how he is longing to be with the dancer and his contentment when he finds her helped the reader to sympathize with him in ways that they could not with the characters in “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”
