Baldoni, Justin. “Why I’m done trying to be man enough.” TEDWomen, Nov. 2017, www. https://www.ted.com/talks/justin_baldoni_why_i_m_done_trying_to_be_man_enough.

  1. What do you believe is the purpose of this TED Talk, and why might this information be beneficial for men and women regardless of sexual orientation?
  2. Discuss what you think is the most important message for viewers to take away from this TED Talk.
  3. Both men and women experience the pressures of gender role expectations, but it is often said that men have more rigid gender roles than women. Provide a specific explanation and example of why you agree or disagree with this, but before answering, really explore the idea of a male stepping out of a male gender role into a female role and a female stepping out of a female role into a male role.

VIDEO #2: I’m the Scary Transgender Person the Media Warned You About (7:12)

  1. Reflect on Rebekah’s experience. What stood out to you as important to know about a transgender person? What did you learn from her story?
  2. It’s not uncommon for parents of LGBTQ+ children to feel fear for their children. What are some fears that a parent might experience? Contemplate the fears you listed and determine the basis of them. Particularly, are the fears a transgender issue or societal issue?
  3. People across the globe are similar in that most desire to be loved and accepted. Consider this, a person who struggles with loving and accepting themselves experiences unhealthy self-esteem, which greatly impacts the quality of their life. If a person continuously receives the message—from those they know or complete strangers—that they are not lovable or acceptable because of their human sexuality (or any other reason), in what ways might this impact their well-being?
  4. What might you say or do to empower someone to transcend the contempt of others so they can lead a healthy and happy life? Generalize this to any human who experiences self-inflicted disdain or disdain from others.
  5. What is your viewpoint on what skills need to be developed at the individual level, parental/familial level, and societal level for people to be accepting of other people?

What do you think people, males and females, should do to be leaders of change when it comes to domestic violence and sexual abuse?
