Art produced along the Silk Road Research Paper

Goals:

To evaluate the students’ understanding of the arts produced along the Trade Routes

To cultivate excellent research, writing and visual communication skills.

The art produced on the trade routes had many cultural, artistic influences and historical impacts in

materials used, design elements and aesthetics. Select one object from the Aga Khan Museum’s Hidden

Stories: Books along the Silk Road exhibition as an example of the eclectic art produced along the trade

routes which exemplifies various cross-cultural influences. Place the art within a historical context and

discuss how the artifact of your choice exhibits the values, politics and other impacts of that particular

time and location.

You will then produce a StoryMap based upon your own research, in which you will use appropriate

language and style for a piece of scholarly writing, and in which you use a variety of images and sources,

complete with footnotes and full bibliography.

Total marks: 30 points

Project guidelines:

Maximum 2000 words

Bibliography minimum 20 sources

Images maximum 15

Include mapping and timeline

Draft Outline of Final Project

Due date: Wednesday, 24 November Grade: 10 points

This part of the assignment is designed to help you organize and prepare all of your material for your final project,

so that you can easily transition between your research notes and ideas, and the final StoryMap presentation.

1. Create an introduction and conclusion, and divide your material into appropriate sections so that your

ideas can flow logically. Remember, the introduction will help you to structure your ideas: clearly identify

your specific topic, the main points you intend to explore and explain HOW you will approach these ideas

in your paper.

2. You may use point form to create your outline, but be as specific as possible: the more specific you can

be, the better the results.

Please feel free to include notes to yourself such as “quotation from Wriggins page 68” to indicate to

yourself where you intend to include supporting material.

3. Don’t forget to make your final decisions about which images you will include.
