Boston College Electronic Literature Project Proposal Paper

choose one of these projects

1. Prepare an original WWW-based (or other) creative project (could include making hypermedia narratives, multi-path Twine stories (see http://twinery.org/ (Links to an external site.)), animations, or other types of coded works); such projects must be accompanied by a 250-500 word explanatory project statement.

2. IBM POETRY: Download / read my lecture (Links to an external site.) and the Williams piece on IBM method (Links to an external site.). Download the IBM Poem template (Links to an external site.) and make two different IBM poems using the process. In addition to creating the poems, compose a 750-1000 word response discussing your impressions of the exercise, and also places this work in the context of Electronic Literature as outlined in Rettberg’s book. (Note: this is an analog project, there is no programming required; however, if you are a programmer and would like to try to make a digital version of this piece.

3. TAROKO GORGE REMIX: Create two of your own thematically-based version(s) of Taroko Gorge. In order to accomplish this, you will have to edit the html/javascript code from Montfort’s original. In addition to creating and posting your remix, submit a 750-1000 word response discussing your personal experience in creating such a work.

Note:

With regard to #1, any sort of creative project that falls within your technical capabilities is probably acceptable. Many of you have programming skills, which perhaps you can apply to some type of e-lit project.  I recommend that you avoid “translating” a poem or story originally written in a notebook, unless its new electronic context adds significant dimensions; a plain 1:1 literal conversion is not a particularly compelling area to explore, & I discourage you from using a simple slideshow approach to the project (i.e., No PowerPoints, etc.)… you should try to stay away from something utterly basic, OK?

please submit the Project Proposal  before starting work on the project
