ORGL 3900 Abia Polytechnic University Education Commissioner on Life Skills Letter

The state legislature recently passed a bill that requires all public high school students to take and pass a “life skills” course before they can graduate. The legislature was purposefully vague about how this policy would be implemented because they wanted to allow experts in the education community to use their knowledge to develop the course and determine when and how it should be taught. Education Commissioner, Gerald Baily, would like to assemble a task force that will develop a plan for implementation of this policy.

Write a letter to Commissioner Baily, advising him on what steps he should take next.

  1. Who should he invite to the task force meeting and why? Teachers? School board administrators? Curriculum and instruction experts at the Department of Education? Parents?
  2. Create a simple outline of the topics that the course will include. Financial literacy? Cooking? College or job force skills?
  3. When should students have to take the course? Sophomore, junior, or senior year? Can some students be exempt from the course? Under what circumstances?
