Need help with my English question – I’m studying for my class.

1. provide your assessment of the occupations represented in the videos.  Using Carr’s criteria, to what extent do you think the occupation qualifies as a profession?  Sharpen your analysis by comparing and contrasting how well the occupation conforms to Carr’s criteria as compared to one of the traditionally recognized professions: e.g., lawyer, doctor, nurse, certified public accountant, health services management.

What Is It to Be a Professional?

It is natural to begin with the question of what it is that makes something a profession. Philosopher David Carr has proposed five criteria that, taken together, help distinguish professions from other occupations. These criteria are as follows:

  • Professions provide an important public service
  • Professions require both theoretical and practical expertise – typically they require both higher level education and a period of training of “apprenticeship”
  • Professions have a distinct ethical dimension that typically requires expression in a code of practice
  • Professions require organization and regulation for the purposes of recruitment and discipline
  • Professional practitioners require a high degree of independent judgment and action for effective practice.
