University of New Orleans Migration Push Factors World Regional Geography Essay

Background: Immigration to the United States, and other developed countries, is a complex demographic phenomenon that has been a major source of population growth and cultural change. This demographic occurrence extends into many of the 9 themes outlined in the text. Immigration has been, and continues to be, controversial in the economic, social, and political worlds. Controversial topics involving immigration includes (but is not limited to): changing race and ethnicity of a country, economic benefits and drawbacks, jobs for immigrants vs. non-immigrants, settlement patterns, crime, and voting behavior.

As globalization increases the need for labor in certain sectors of the economy, and deteriorating conditions in other countries, many people are choosing to move where those jobs are located. Many migrants choose to do so illegally. Here is a link to give you some general ideas of where people are migrating from, and where they are illegally migrating to: Link (Links to an external site.)

Instructions: For this assignment, you will need to select a particular group whose members often choose to move illegally. You can choose a group from the link above, one that you are familiar with, or one that you would like to learn more about. As you are completing your answers, be aware of 9 themes outlined in the chapter!

  • List and discuss issues that are motivating their decisions to leave their own countries (migration push factors).
  • List and discuss characteristics of the country that provides them with jobs (migration pull factors).
  • Describe the hazards that they may experience in their migration.
  • Suggest international responsibilities (of both the migrant’s home country and the host country) to decrease this dangerous, and often life-threatening, practice.
