Florida State University Pied Beauty Poem Analysis

I’m working on a literature discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.

Point out other instances of alliteration and/or assonance in the line that your classmate did not notice

Make sure your responses do not simply summarize and approve of your classmates’ points! Your response should be roughly 150 words and should do one of the following:

  • Suggest additional ways of interpreting the line(s) your classmates have chosen.
  • Point out other instances of alliteration and/or assonance in the line that your classmate did not notice, and explain how you think this might be relevant and interesting.
  • Find and discuss one other instance of alliteration in your classmate’s poem that you think also helps to develop the ideas, feelings, and images they associated with their chosen example of alliteration. Describe how you think it does this.
  • below is what needs to be evaluated
  • The poem “Pied Beauty” by Gerard Manley Hopkins is elegantly composed and utilizes alliteration to generate a feeling that can’t always be felt by just reading. Alliteration is the repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of closely connected words. For example “ Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?) With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;” (Hopkins, lines 8-9). These two lines both have alliteration the first line you see the words fickle and frecked which both share the starting letter f. In line 9 the s sound is used swift, slow, sweet, and sour. Hopkins may have chosen to use alliteration mainly because it sounds appealing to the listener. Poems tend to be more abstract writing pieces where traditional writing styles of simply explaining tend to be less graceful. By using alliteration it allows the author to describe a complex feeling of emotion that would be ruined if blatantly stated. Alliteration also helps set the mood of the poem in this case the alliteration being done with the s gives me a feeling of productivity. The words swiftly and slow have opposite meanings but when used together with alliteration it creates a mood of tranquility. Alliteration also establishes a melody in your head very similar to music. This tactic can be used to make the poem easy to read but also have many deeper meanings. Music and poetry are very similar which is why many of the same elements used in your favorite songs such as alliteration are also used in poetry. The word sour is also used but since it is used in the alliteration sequence it doesn’t seem as harsh as reading the word alone. I get a great sense of calmness reading the poem it reminds me of a carefree summer day drinking sour lemonade and relaxing in the countryside along a stream. The words bring your mind to nature. I picture sitting outside watching the wonders the world has to offer. The poem makes me almost reflect as if I watch as life goes by so fast in front of you but by sitting there everything seems too slow. My take away from this line was don’t live in the future enjoy the present.
