UT Ethiopia Has Inadequate Access to Primary Care and Health Education Response
Respond to the following in at least 100 words.
In the US, there are public health regulatory systems such as The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration are examples of regulatory systems in the US. They provide information on tracking disease, reporting data, and promoting public health through the safety of food, drugs, vaccines, etc.
Ethiopia has limited access to health care and health access. The country is ranked 92 out of 95 on the UNDP Human Poverty Index and one of the poorest places in Africa, about 45% of the country is living below the poverty line. There are about 133,000 refugees from nearby countries in Ethiopia. Access to clean water and sanitation is also a problem. The health care systems in Ethiopia have hospitals, health care centers, and health posts.
However, Ethiopia has the Ethiopia Food and Drug Authority which is the National Regulatory center under the ministry of health in the country. It is responsible for the quality, safety, and/or efficacy of medicines, food, cosmetics, and medical devices much like the FDA in the US as it aims to promote public health and provide health and safety to its community.
The access to care is a bit more limited in Ethiopia however, 80% of the country is living in rural areas and 20% in urban so many do not have close access to a hospital. The country does have 15,000 health posts which are scattered amongst communities. There are two trained women that run each health post for their community. They keep track of everyone in their community and pregnant women who need health assistance.
