De Anza College Atypical Sexual Variations Activities Questions
Atypical sexual behaviors (those that are not expressed by most people in a society and/or sexual behaviors that have been labeled as deviant, perverted, aberrant, or abnormal). More recently, the less judgmental term paraphilia (pair-uh-FILL-ee-uh) has been used to describe these types of sexual expression. “Paraphilia” is the psychiatric term for a problematic sexual desire or behavior. Social attitudes strongly color what is considered sexually normal and what is considered abnormal.
There are typically three (3) criteria for a sexual desire to be considered a paraphilia:
- is distress associated with the desire or behavior
- is the desire or behavior required for sexual arousal
- is there a victim
Assignment:
Watch the Atypical Sexual Variations and Fetishes videos and then answer the following questions (discuss as hypothetical if need be). Reflect, Reveal, Explain, Support, or Debate…express yourself with as much precision as possible as you discuss the following (no reference required):
1. Do you have any type of behavior that you’re afraid your partner wouldn’t approve of or not interested in doing (for example some people don’t like to kiss)…and should they have to change/accommodate to please you? Why or why not.
2. What would you do/say if your partner revealed that they have a behavior they’d like to engage in that you don’t approve of or are turned off by? Describe how you would explain your thoughts and feelings about this to your partner.
3. Should desires be suppressed (hidden or concealed) if your partner is not willing to participate in atypical sexual activities that you’re interested in engaging in? Why or why not?
