University of North Carolina Primary Elements of Family Systems Theory Essay

For this assignment, you will apply the concepts of Bowen’s Family Systems Theory (as described in Gilbert) to the family described in The Family Crucible. You will describe Bowen’s concepts in their own language and illustrate their understanding of the concepts and relational patterns through the interactions of the Brice family. You will also evaluate both the cultural and feminist critiques of Bowen’s theory (as outlined in Knudson-Marin and Rothbaum’s articles) and re-interpret the Brice family through a feminist and cultural framework.

The objectives of this paper are as follows:

  1. 1) Articulate the foundational elements of Family Systems Theory
  2. 2) Apply Family Systems Theory to explain family processes
  3. 3) Evaluate Family Systems Theory through critical frameworks

Please include the following section headers and address the respective components therein:

In your own words, describe the primary elements of FTS: relationship patterns (conflict, distance, cutoff, over/under functioning, triangles), sibling position, fusions, and individual/togetherness forces. Using the language and assumptions of FTS, describe the primary relationship patterns present in the Brice family. Map the triangles that exist in the Brice family (describe the process of triangulation that existed in session). Describe how sibling positions influenced the family’s processes. Describe the individuality and togetherness forces at play in the family. Using the feminist and cultural critiques of FST, discuss potentially problematic conceptualizations of the Brice family (i.e. consider how a conceptualization using FTS may be culturally-specific and patriarchal).
