HIST 17A WVC Filibuster in The US in The Senate Discussion

I’m working on a History question and need guidance to help me study.

Introduction: In the last couple of lectures, we have looked at American politics in the 1780s with the debate over the Constitution, political factions between the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans in the 1790s, and the solidification of the political parties by 1840 with the Whigs and Democrats. Political divisions have always been a part of American history and continue to shape our identity even until now. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican or even an independent, we can all agree that the division and gridlock in Congress that have been going on for the last decade is very frustrating. We have so many problems —jobs, education, housing, homelessness, climate change, guns, LGBTQ rights, abortion, racism, and police brutality —yet Congress is unable to act. Part of this gridlock has to do with a unique procedure tradition in the Senate known as the FILIBUSTER that allowed the minority political party to block a bill from passing simply by talking until the bill expires. This tradition dates back to the 1830s and has evolved and become easier than ever before to prevent policies from being passed. So what are your thoughts on the filibuster? Do you think it’s time to get rid of this tradition? If so, what are the consequences?

Direction:

  1. Before you proceed, view the following video by the Washington Post to familiarize yourself with the filibuster
  2. Once you have reviewed the reading, please listen and review the following episode on the filibuster and its usage today in the Senate by the Washington Post Report Podcast (Links to an external site.)
