I recently attended Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) training so that I can drive the Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) we have if needed. One of the risks involved with driving a UTV is tip-overs. Two- and four-wheel drive, handle differently as well as considerations for different types of terrain. The way we reduce tip-over hazards is by first attending the training to get familiar with the vehicle and all the safety features. There is a roll cage, seatbelt, and either a door or door net to protect you from falling or being ejected out of the vehicle in the event of a tip-over (of course you have to keep all body parts inside the vehicle for these to work best). We were required to wear the appropriate PPE, a helmet, gloves, long pants, and a long sleeve shirt. During the course, we were taught how to go over obstacles, by easing up onto the obstacle utilizing the brake and gas pedals at the same time and then easing down off of the obstacle using the same technique thus maintaining control over the vehicle and hopefully preventing a tip over in the first place.
