Art History: Global Arts GUIDELINES FOR EXHIBITION PAPER

4-5 Exhibit Catalog Essay

This assignment asks you to research and write an exhibition catalog essay on a non-Western art style, artist group, or a theme in art. This paper should not be a full biography of an artist, nor an overview of an artist’s work, nor a comprehensive history of a movement, but should be a more focused study of writing based on a selection of artworks that you “curate” as if for an exhibition. You may wish to browse the course text and power point images for ideas. Please allow enough time for careful research, thought, and writing so that this can be a meaningful learning experience for you.

Your course text, and books, periodicals and exhibit catalogs in the Madison College library are good places to start your research. You will also find useful resources at the UW’s Kohler Art Library. As you consult online sources, please limit yourself to scholarly sources with reliable information (be careful about sites such as Wikipedia); please feel free to ask your professor about sources that may not be scholarly but that you feel will advance your research.

  • ● Please begin your exhibition essay with a thesis statement – your paper’s main point, and then develop this thesis in the body of your paper. Your paper should support your thesis with several well-researched points about your topic that use images as your focal point of discussion. Your paper’s conclusion should not simply restate your thesis, but should instead summarize points you have made in your paper and address directions for possible future research.
  • ● In addition to careful descriptions of your works of art, please incorporate discussion about ways you may choose to exhibit these works to enhance meaning. For example, would you include sound or music and how would this enhance understandings of the work?Papers should be 4 to 5 pages in length (double-spaced, 12-point, in a reasonable font). Please submit illustrations of works of art that you discuss, with identifying captions. Your paper must include proper source citations and a bibliography of at least five sources (not including our course text). At least three of these must be published, scholarly print sources; it is fine if you read these online rather than in print form.Important: you must cite your sources when quoting, paraphrasing, or referring to another author’s ideas. If you are unsure as to proper formats for source citations or bibliography, please consult the Writing Center or the Reference desk in the library. Papers in which sources are not cited will be returned for you to re-write. Your professor is available to offer guidance in selecting topics and in research and writing; please ask for help before a draft of your paper is due.
