University of Waterloo Stratified Random Sampling Discussion Paper

In the following activity you will practice using the Research Randomizer to generate a stratified random sample for a hypothetical research project. This exercise will give you some experience with a random number generator and how it can be used as a tool in constructing a random sample of participants.

The aim of this assignment is to

  • reinforce your understanding of the process of random selection in sampling,
  • participate in using a randomizer tool to construct a random sample, and
  • demonstrate your skill in communicating the steps involved in creating a truly randomized sample.

Imagine that you’re planning to conduct life history interviews with a sample of University of Waterloo alumni attending a reunion event. One of your research goals will involve comparing the life experiences of male alumni to those of female alumni. You only have resources to interview 24 individuals. The table below lists the names of 49 male alumni and 49 female alumni. Note: These are fictitious names created for the purposes of this exercise.

Your task is to generate random number tables that you can use to create a stratified random sample of 12 men and 12 women to recruit from this list. Note: Male names are indicated with (m), female names are indicated with (f).

For this task you will use the Research Randomizer tool you were introduced to in Module 4, section c.

Research Randomizer

Step 1 In a text document (e.g., word), write out the steps you went through in order to create your stratified random sample.

Step 2 In the text document (e.g., word), explain in your own words why this process of random sampling is important. Outline at least one reason, drawing on concepts discussed in Module 4.

Step 3 Copy the output from the Research Randomizer into your word document. See links at the bottom of this page for help with screenshots.

Step 4 Write out the names of the participants that you will select for your stratified random sample based on this list of random numbers.
