Genocide Discussion

Option A: In this Participation assignment, discuss the definition of genocide, the debates about what constitutes and what modern events are genocides, and attempt (using all of our material thus far that applies) to explain why genocides have occurred and will likely occur again in the future. Do you think there is a way to prevent such atrocities from happening? Why do you think people deny the occurrence of some genocides? Please be sure to use examples from lectures and readings.

Option B: After watching Hotel Rwanda, (Links to an external site.) and watching our lecture, discuss the Rwandan Genocide being sure to include what happened and why do you think this happened? What issues or conflicts allowed for such crimes to happen? What role did the International response (or lack) have in the conflict? What did you think about Paul and his actions?

Option C: This is a brand new option inspired by you. Many of you mentioned specific genocides in our last test. Some mentioned Stalin, others Pol Pot, others Hitler and the genocides these people caused. So, for option B I invite you to pick a genocide and discuss what happened, when, where, and why you think it happened. You are in charge, so you can define something as a genocide that the UN might not, it does not have to be Russian, or German, or Cambodia – those are just options Manny of you discussed in the 1 point test question.
