Informational Social Influence and Normative Social Influence Discussion

Learning Goal: I’m working on a psychology question and need guidance to help me learn.

1_ An antisocial personality disorder is clearly different in many important ways from other psychological disorders and involves behaviors and characteristics most people would judge unfavorably from a moral perspective. However, ASPD may have a strong genetic or biological component, and therefore, the characteristic behaviors, though volitional, may not be simply a matter of free choice. Many people with antisocial personality disorder are extremely dangerous. Biological researchers are getting closer to identifying genetic markers or mechanisms that may be causally related to the disorder. Consider the implications of research that would demonstrate clear biological substrates to this disorder in terms of moral or criminal responsibility for antisocial behaviors.

If a gene can be isolated that determines the development of psychopathy, what should be done about this? A range of possibilities can be considered, from screening all parents prenatally with this genetic marker to mandatory psychotherapy, to no special consideration. Explain all pros and cons of your suggested possibilities.

reply to : if this is the case where a gene can be isolated then determines the development of psychopathy, i feel that maybe screening should be something that always happens. avoiding to cathc something in its early stages can be very dangerous. i also think that aybe screening while still in the womb would be a good idea. parens have doctors have screen for other things defects during that time why not this aswell. catching this early means being able to help the child/person and everyone else around them because that person will be able to handle the child/person properly. along with people around them being ablet to handle them the person themselves will be able to know how to go about their life daily.

Some pros with this would be that they can get a head start on mentally preparing themselves for the world that they are about to face. the family will be able to prepare themselves mentally for how they are going to have to help the child get through their days while also preparing themselves mentally to handle how people may or maynot treat their child and how they are themselves are going to have to treat the child.

Reply to : This information makes me wonder if genetic screening should be done for other psychopathologies in addition to certain genetic defects or life-threatening illnesses like Tay-Sachs. While I think screening is beneficial, I wonder when people would want to start screening for other irrelevant traits such as eye or skin color. Would this be a slippery slope to Eugenics? Is it possible that because we live in a society with high entitlement and low accountability that fewer people would take responsibility for their own actions, if ASPD is found to be biological? Would they argue that they cannot help being anti-social in the same way that people cannot help being born with a nose or eyelashes? There was a Law and Order: SVU episode that touched on this topic. It seemed abstract them but now I see it was based in some kind of research.

On the other hand, genetic screening could lead to a safer society in the long run with less cases of crime. Personally, I do not see the cons to genetic screening because I think it is something that should be done anyway. However, I can see how it could make life more difficult for the parents who are getting tested. If the parents of the potential anti-social child would like to continue with the pregnancy, then I think mandatory psychotherapy is the least they could do. It would not just be beneficial to them but society as a whole, so I do not see any cons here.
second thing :

Select a person from current events or history whom you believe is or was self-actualized. Use examples to illustrate in-depth how this person’s characteristics exemplify Maslow’s model.

reply to : The person who I consider to be self-actualized is the singer T-Boz from the popular girl group TLC. T-Boz has been battling sickle cell for years and has even suffered from a brain tumor at one point in her life. She was in the hospital left and right while TLC was in their prime. However, she never let the disease stop her for following her dreams and becoming apart of one of the most successful female girl groups of all time. Even while being ill she went on tour, created classic albums with her bandmates, performed at shows, rehearsed, and was taking care of her daughter with the help of family. She was told that she wouldn’t live past 30 nor would be able to have kid. She is now 51 years old with a daughter and an adopted son. She is also currently performing with her bandmate at different concerts dancing and all. Self-actualized people are those who have the desire for self-fulfillment and doing everything that they are capable of. T-Boz’s strength and her self-drive is what makes her a self-actualized person in my eyes because even though she has sickle cell, she beat the odds and didn’t let the disease break her down. The disease made her stronger and made her push herself even more to become greater an influential to many others who are in her same shoes.
reply to: Harriet Tubman is a person who has self-actualized into becoming a monumental and inspiring person. Being a woman and black during such a rough time in history made life unbearable for not only Harriet Tubman but every other black person during that time. Every black person during that time, including Harriet Tubman, deeply valued physiological needs. Given that food, water, shelter, clothing and other basic human needs were given to them in small increments. Harriet Tubman’s safety needs were also a crucial aspect of her livelihood given that her life wasn’t valued in any capacity. Harriet Tubman and every other black person weren’t viewed as human beings, just workers there to be mistreated. So every day was a battle to survive or to not be mutilated or raped. Through all of these adversities, built a sense of love and understanding between all of the slaves. They relied on each other to get through the rough times and maltreatment. This familial connection that the slaves shared helped build enough esteem to want to escape and be free. Harriet Tubman inflicted every slave with the courage to escape and informed them that they are human beings who deserve to be treated as such. Once Harriet Tubman devised a clear plan, she led many slaves into freedom. This led Harriet Tubman to become fully self-actualized for the bravery she possessed for not only herself, but for people like her as well. She put her life on the line to help hundreds of people in the same situation as her. Harriet Tubman wanted to be the most helpful person she could become. She was aware of her purpose in life so she devoted the rest of her life to assisting black people because she knew there was a consequential need for it.

***Extra resource for you. Not required, but if the design and outcomes of the Milgram study are unclear to you for any reason, try watching this video from Khan Academy: Milgram experiment on obedience_Khan Academy.mp4

Write a discussion post (at least 200 words, see syllabus for detailed instructions) in which you identify two possible topics you might complete your social issues paper on. Describe why you find each topic interesting and what issues you might want to explore related to each topic. The presentation of each topic should be about 100 words.

*You do not need to choose a paper topic related to conformity (which is what we are covering this week). Your topic can come from anything we have covered so far. I encourage you to take a look ahead in your syllabus and textbook and to examine whether you’re interested in any topics that we may be covering in the coming weeks. This assignment is intended to help you get started on your social issues paper, which will be due at the end of the semester. This is an opportunity for you to get some feedback from me on your topic choices.
