American College of Education Goal Setting and Decision Making Worksheet

Design a Stacked Lesson

Effective instructional strategies require training to develop skills and abilities. Through training, teachers are provided opportunities to think about each instrument included and layer or stack the lesson to support a range of skills.

  • Select a format for delivering the products in the steps of the assignment.
  • Use APA formatting for citations and references.
  • Follow the steps to complete the assignment.

Step 1. Preparations
Select a topic with various perspectives. Create a lesson by establishing the target outcomes and three (3) different levels of performance (advanced, average, struggling) in relation to the product. Do not create three separate lessons. You should create one lesson and within that lesson suggest ways to differentiate instruction for each student level (advanced, average, struggling).

Step 2. Bottom Stack
Plan a different training session on a selected skill, such as one of DeBono’s Six Hats. The partners cross train each other. Together, they use the skill or hat to investigate another aspect of the topic selected for the stacked lesson.

Step 3. Second Stack
Help students understand how to create effective questions. Describe the steps taken to model questions, guiding students in developing their own questions for the topic under investigation.

Step 4. Third Stack
Add an exemplar or attribute training session focused on the same product. Use technology in the design of the session.

Step 5. Fourth Stack
Dissect the lesson using Blooms’ 4×6 matrix.

Step 6. Fifth Stack
Review the series of steps in this assignment. How does introducing a new concept require a different shift in thinking about differentiation? What’s missing, from your perspective, and why? Students need time to reflect about what they have learned.
