alleviate a Community Problem Affecting Children and Families Analysis

The Community Project is the Key Assessment for this course. It will integrate much of what we have learned during the class.

In this assessment, you are asked to focus your knowledge of child development, family and community characteristics, and advocacy to identify and create a plan to alleviate a community concern that would have an effect on children and their families or an early care and learning problem within the community that would affect both children and their families.

Instructions:

  1. Identify an issue/problem/concern impacting children and families in your class, center, school, neighborhood or community.
  2. Develop a viable plan to alleviate/solve the identified issue using your knowledge of the community, family-community interaction, child development and advocacy.
  3. Research the problem by referring back to information obtained in the Field Experience assignment, your textbook, Ted Talks, or other peer reviewed sources. Two resources are need to complete this assignment.
  4. Assignment should be approximately 3 pages in length (This does not inlcude the title page or the reference page). Assignment should be double spaced using 12 font.

Your assignment must respond directly to each of the following steps:

Step 1: Identifying the Problem

  • Describe the issue and how it affects children and families, including pertinent information revealed in your research (this maybe demographics from the community or relevant source of issue affecting childcare quality). Research should be cited within the body of the assignment with complete reference given at the end of the assignment.

For example: no playground for neighborhood children, meals or snacks that are not nutritious being served to children, the number of assessments administered to pre-kindergarten children, lack of pay for childcare providers, etc.

  • Provide an explanation of why you chose this issue and why you feel it is a concern to you and your families. Anecdotal observations are acceptable. Associate this issue with the Code of Ethical Conduct early childhood educators and why it is relevant to the Code.

Step 2: Finding the Solution

  • Create a viable plan designed to alleviate/solve the designated issue/problem/concern using your knowledge of child development, family-teacher interaction skills and methods, community resources and advocacy.
  • Describe the actions you would take as an advocate. List all resources you would utilize; people, groups, agencies and political figures. Plan should be realistic and practical.

Step 3: Professionalism Reflection

Write a reflection (1 paragraph of the 3-page assignment) on how this project illustrates your knowledge of professionalism in the early childhood field. Give evidence that you are an informed advocate for young children and their families and/or the early childhood profession.
