Central Florida Institute Palm Harbor Humanities Canterbury Tales Discussion

We are reading two of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales this week: the Miller and the Wife of Bath. Look very carefully at their descriptions in the General Prologue, and discuss what you think of them. Are they likable characters? Why/why not? Make sure to explain.

You can also feel free to take note of what you think about all of the pilgrims in general if you’d like. We’re going to see a lot of interruptions in the Miller’s and the Wife’s tales, so the interaction between all pilgrims is quite interesting to follow.

Have you read any of these tales before? If so, what do you remember about them?

Do you anticipate any issues that might come up when each of them begin to tell their tales? Do you have any idea what kind of tale each of them might tell based on what the General Prologue reveals about them?

Finally, take some time to note areas of the reading that are confusing and/or difficult for you. Now that we are in the world of Chaucer, you might be having a bit more difficulty with this text than the others we have covered thus far. And please, don’t feel bad if this is a tough read for you–I’m sure many of you will have to work a bit harder at this. Once you get the hang of it, though, it should be easier. I’d encourage you all to view at least a minute or two of the YouTube link that I posted on our Chaucer module that has an individual reading the prologue. It’s the one titled Recited General Prologue, which is towards the bottom of that module.
