Social research can be pursued within any of the several theoretical paradigms of Sociology (or other disciplines). Each offers the opportunity to investigate the topic in slightly different ways, resulting in different research questions or hypotheses. Sometimes topics fall neatly into one paradigm, but often a topic can be approached from multiple paradigms. This discussion will challenge you to consider how a topic might be examined through different paradigms and how that may affect the variables selected for the study.

select a social problem that you may like to research in the future or that interests you, such as policing, racial inequality, ageism, grandparenting, war, poverty, etc. Using one of the paradigms from the reading/lesson, explain how you might go about investigating the issue. What would be the main variables in your study? Why? What variables may cause it or be important in finding a solution?
