MU Hercules as A Hero & Several Stories of This Character Discussion
Q- A brief note from the Harry Potter discussion – it was really interesting to see how many of you remembered watching the films with your family! That kind of shared experience is really heartwarming. I hope families will continue to enjoy the films together. When I taught this course for the first time, 10 years ago, it was more common for students to remember reading the books with their friends at school, and maybe to have seen a couple of the films.
For our last discussion, please reflect on which hero was the most interesting or most surprising to you, and something you’ve learned that you want to be sure to remember.
examples on how I want you to write
1-I think the heroes that stood out to me the most was Beowulf and Odysseus. I read both of their stories in High School, but I didn’t realize how tactful and clever both heroes were. It was also interesting to read the original sources of Robin Hood and Mulan, two figures I’ve seen in various media over the years. I hope from now on to be more observant of heroes and the journeys they go through.
2-The most interesting hero was Binti. She went through the absolute worst things possible and was still able to get up and fight for her life and the lives of everyone on Oomza Uni. I want to remember the heroic journey. I want to see how often it is used is films and shows.
3-Learning about different heroes was an exciting experience. I liked the structure of the class where we started with ancient heroes such as Odysseus, Heracles, and Perseus which helped to form a good basis of heroism. This was instrumental in moving to modern heroes such as Miles, Binti, and Harry Potter. The hero is found to be most interesting was Binti. This is because the novel imagines a future when we are able to interact with other species in the universe. I liked how Binti was able to save herself from the Meduse and created peace among the Meduse and the Oomza. Her technological and mathematical knowhow was interesting and it took a different approach from other heroes we have learned about. One thing I am sure to remember is the hero’s journey and I will be looking out for the pattern when watching a hero’s movie
4-The most interesting and most surprising hero for me was Heracles (Hercules) because of the difference between the actual story and the animated Disney film. From the reading experience, we see his true story and how it compares to the movie. Overall, something that I have learned from this course that I would remember is how to evaluate heroes from different books and films. Not only could you judge them by their heroic attributes, but also by their stance about various ethical approaches. Another thing I would want to remember is how to look at a hero’s journey and how that could affect their characteristics and actions
