How do you determine the quality of vitamins? Here is a great link from WebMD that offers sound advice regarding vitamin quality. http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/lifestyle-guide-11/how-to-evaluate-vitamins-supplements?page=1

In your opinion, do you feel that we can obtain sufficient amounts of nutrients from food alone, or is vitamin supplementation necessary? How can one ensure sufficient vitamin/mineral intake from the diet? Please share your thoughts and opinions.

Respond to this student:

I think it all depends on the person for the nutrients from food. There are people who read every single label, know all of the calories and nutritients they’re taking in. While others don’t necessarily know much about it. There are also some people who have a deficiency or lack certain things such as B12 or B3. For instance, I have a B12 deficiency and have to get shots every 3 months. My levels were so low that the oral option wasn’t even a consideration right away. Hopefully soon or eventually I can switch to the pills but for now I have to take a shot of B12. There aren’t many foods that someone like me can eat to get what I need, so in this case, the vitamins are worth it. I don’t think vitamins are EVER bad. I think even the healthiest person on the planet can benefit from taking everyday vitamins. Even probiotics, people don’t even realize how bad their gut may be unitl they start taking the vitamins who can help them. I personally think vitamins are good for everyone. Some may think they don’t need them and this may be true but they can never hurt. I take what I need every single morning and I have never felt better. Even for someone who doesn’t drink milk. There are calcium tablets that can help with the loss of the calcium from not drinking milk! There is a vitamin or a supplement for everythinig that someone may lack and I think everyone should definately look into vitamin supplementation, even if they think they’re healthy or may not need them!
