The second _test covers early Christianity, Byzantine, Islam, and the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages is one of the first great epochs of western European history, spanning some 1000 years. During this era, the Catholic church had a strong influence. The Catholic church was a primary patron of the arts, and to receive payment artists and composers had to produce works that church officials liked. If the art and music did not comply with the recommendations of the church, it was, in essence, censored.

For this first assignment I would like for you to research the idea of censorship in art and/or music. A simple Google search of “art censorship” or “music censorship” will yield many results, spanning all eras of history (your research does not have to tie in to the Middle Ages). What are some common reasons art and music are censored? What are examples of censored artworks or compositions? Are any of the artists or musicians you like at risk of being censored based on the reasons you found? Does censorship spill over to other arts, like literature?
