A person who has been released from prison may have difficulty on several fronts. First, they may have challenges dealing with reconnecting with their social lives, especially in light of their negative portrayal as criminals. Second, they may also have difficulty in attaining jobs that may lead to financial instability. Finally, most of them will have psychological problems as a result of external stressors.

  1. Do you have family members like siblings, parents? How is your relationship with them?
  2. Do you have a circle of friends who can help you settle in?
  3. What changes can you make in your behavior to make the community have restored trust in you?
  4. Do you have any work skills? With your current skills, what job opportunities do you think are best suited for you?
  5. How will you ensure you rebuild the interpersonal relationships that may have been damaged during your time locked up?
  6. How will you give back to the community?
  7. Do you have anyone you can turn to in terms of financial or other forms of difficulty?
  8. How do you wish to be view by your family members?
  9. Are you a religious individual? Before you arrest, did you belong to any community? Do you consider going back to the same religious community, or have you changed your decision?

The first intervention I might undertake to help this person succeed in their new life is life skills training. I will use life skills to develop competencies in this individual to ensure they have a mindset for dealing with the challenges that they may face. Stress management programs will help ensure such a person has developed a positive attitude to life by changing how they deal with internal and external stressful situation. For example, changing their environment may help the individual, so they don’t put themselves in a compromising situation that may cause relapse. Giving these individual stress management skills and life skills training will help them start and hopefully succeed in their new life.

Counseling and client advocacy are complementary to each other. This process involves a set of decisions made by client and counselor. If external barriers prevent the client’s healthy development, the question’s responsibility it is to confront these obstacles. The counseling process helps the client learn self-advocacy skills. Client advocacy is especially important for clients who are affected by multiple oppressions. The role of the counselor-advocate involved connecting the clients with community resources that they would not have been able to access without help. Also, the counselor’s advocacy work on behalf of clients is improved when the community is home to a responsive helping network. Community counselors can use their knowledge and skills to play roles in building responsive, helping networks and helping to carry out community-based planning.

When community counselors carry out client advocacy, their primary goal is negotiating service and educational systems on behalf of their clients and helping them gain access to resources that they need. A lot of question came to my mind but I thinking in specific questions that reported to me valuable information in order to help a client who has been imprisoned, is now being released, and wishes to return and reintegrate to their home and community.

  1. Do you consider yourself the same person you were when you were first imprisoned as to who you are now?
  2. Do you have any friends outside of family in your community that support you when you returned?
  3. Do you know about any type of social support do you have in the community?
  4. Do you have any fears about returning to your home?
  5. Do you feel safe in your house?
  6. Is your neighborhood problematic or safe for you?
  7. Can you support yourself?
  8. Do you have work skills?
  9. What are your career goals?
  10. What work can you do?
  11. Do you know about educational resources available to you?
  12. Would you want information about counselling in your community?
  13. Have you had any suicidal attempts and/or thoughts in the past?
  14. What are your plans or goals for the near future?
  15. Would you like to continue your education?
