Old South & Slavery

Sometimes we like to think of the old antebellum South as the “good old days” of moonlight and magnolias. But what was the antebellum (before the Civil War) South actually like? Was it really the good old days? Were all Southerners alike and did they all think alike? How did white Southerners view themselves and view the black people around them? How did the institution of slavery affect all aspects of the Old South and how was it bad for everyone involved? Would you have liked to have lived in the Old South from 1830 to 1861?
