Student Profile for Samantha

At an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting, a school psychologist typically interprets the assessment results of a student who has been referred for special education services. If the assessment results indicate the student has a disability that significantly adversely affects his or her education performance, the student is determined eligible for special education services in the qualifying area of the disability.

The IEP team then collaboratively plans an IEP that contains special education goals specific to the student’s learning needs. This program planning includes establishing learning goals for the student, identifying the types of specialized instruction and related services to be provided, identifying who will deliver the services, as well as the frequency and location of the services to be provided. The goals identified in the IEP clarify any needed accommodations and modifications the student may require.

As the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) and No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) mandate that all students, including students with disabilities, participate in statewide assessments (LD Online, n.d.), alternative assessments are considered. In addition, there is a current emphasis on special educators being trained on how to appropriately use assistive technology to accommodate a student with special needs and the accessibility of assistive technologies to the general education curriculum.

For this Assignment, you examine the profile of a student with a disability and develop appropriate IEP goals to meet her learning needs. When writing goals, you explore accommodations and/or modifications to support participation in statewide assessments. You also evaluate the use of assistive technology to support reading.

To Prepare:

-Review this week’s media programs and Learning Resources and consider Samantha’s placement discussion, which occurred 3 months after her initial placement; statewide assessment alternatives; and assistive technology to support student learning.
-Review the document Student Profile for Samantha in this week’s Learning Resources and consider Samantha’s learning needs that may require accommodations and modifications, particularly those that may involve statewide assessment and assistive technology. In addition, review the document Writing Quality Instructional and Behavioral Individualized Education Program (IEP) Goals in the Learning Resources for this week.
-Research your state’s (Georgia) department of education website and do the following:
+Locate a sample IEP or a template your state uses for IEPs. (Note: If you are unable to locate the IEP form for your state, use the Minnesota Individualized Education Program (IEP) Template provided in your Learning Resources. Consider that various kinds of information are required on the IEP, particularly with regard to student accommodations and modifications.
+Locate and review the required statewide assessments and the policies relevant to special education students.
+Research and find examples of assistive technology used with special education students. Think about the types of assistive technology that might be used to support Samantha’s learning.
*******Assignment (2–3 pages):

**Summarize the guidelines for participation of students with exceptionalities in statewide assessment in your state (Georgia).
**Develop four IEP goals for Samantha based on the following:
**Develop one goal to accommodate and/or modify Samantha’s participation in the statewide assessment. Justify your goal using examples and information from your Learning Resources.
**Develop one goal to support reading through the use of assistive technology. Justify your goal using examples and information from your Learning Resources.
**Develop two reading goals addressing Samantha’s learning needs. For one of the reading goals, identify an appropriate modification that would support her learning. Justify your goals using examples and information from your Learning Resources.
