Each group will complete a project which looks at how public health has approached a specific health issue. To do this, each group will illustrate how public health has applied the three core functions of public health (assessment, policy development, and assurance) to improve the health issue. Specifically, each group will identify the Ten Essential Public Health Services implemented.

So far, groups have defined the public health issue they have chosen to study, described how the issue is monitored, how it is diagnosed, and how it is treated. For the next step in the project, groups will complete Assignment 3 which looks at the efforts made to educate the population at risk and to minimize negative health outcomes.

Assignment 3: Policy and Development

Using at least three credible sources (examples: government agencies, public health organizations, academic journals), answer the following questions:

1. How does public health educate the population at risk about the health issue or public health threat? 
2. What do the public and/or private sectors do to engage the population at risk to minimize and eliminate the health issue or threat to public health? 
3. What policies in the public and/or private sector promote the education of and protection from the health issue or public health threats?
