CRIJ 3301 University of Texas Criminal Justice & Border Security Discussion
The following bolded phrases should be used as required subheadings. They form the basis for the grading criteria.
1. Purpose of Study: briefly introduce the key theme/topic and clearly state what you aim to achieve with this case study (remember that you are building an argument in relation to a particular aspect of border and immigration).Explain, explicitly, how this problem helps you put forward an argument for or against a particular practice supported by the state on border and immigration.
3-5 clear, complete sentences or a short paragraph will suffice.
2. Background: explain in some more detail what the problem is about. Provide some history as to what has been done on the matter and clearly identify the gaps. It is important that you demonstrate that you are knowledgeable on the subject. Avoid broad or personal sentences, as they generally do not really provide much information.
As you introduce the case, address the following type of questions (according to relevance to your specific topic):
Why is this a relevant case to discuss issues of paths to legalization of undocumented immigrants? What is particularly interesting or unique about this case? How could this case help expand the discussion on legalization for a specific population (i.e. seniors, farmworkers, construction workers, veterans, unaccompanied minors etc.) -if applicable? How does geography -the border- impact on this issue (or population, policy implementation, etc.)1/2 -1 page should suffice
3. Case Presentation:
Here you will introduce the data existing on the problem you are analyzing. Present the details, procedures, what has been done. What others have written on the topic. Here you need to use your research sources to support your statements. So, each time you refer to an analysis of the case or a previous study on the subject, you need to cite the source ‟(author, p.#).” But do NOT use “direct quotes” excessively. This will result in point deductions. Paraphrase instead (explain ideas in your own words, then cite the source).
2-4 pages should suffice.
4. Conclusion and Recommendation:
In this section you will reiterate the key points you have put forward thus far and their importance.
Summarized what you considered should be «lessons learned» regarding your topic.
Make a statement of position either in favor or against of the particular issue you are analyzing. Explicitly present the rationale for your position.
Finally suggest ONE keyand CONCRETE step toward a solution to the issue.
1/2 – 1 page should suffice.
5. References: You are required to use in-text citations throughout the paper, eg. (Smith, p. 17), to support your statements. You are also required to provide the list of references at the end of your essay, for all sources cited in-text. The required style for the class is APA 7th “(Smith, 1994, p. 17)”. If you are more familiar with MLA or another style, you can use it. As long as you use it correctly and consistently.
You should use a minimum of 4 scholarly sources, outside those used in class AND you use at least two authoritative websites (any of the ones listed above or other organizations that work on healthcare access and/or healthcare access policy). You are also encouraged to used class readings, whenever relevant.
The total length of the paper should be between 5 and 7 pages, double spaced, including references but not the cover page.
