Leader versus Manager
As a healthcare manager, being able to discern the difference between a leader and a manager is critical. In this discussion, you will have the opportunity to evaluate and assess these differences. Consider the definitions of “leader” and “manager.” What are the characteristics of a leader and a manager? Which do you believe is most influential in the health care organization? Why? Can one person be both manager and leader? Explain.

To support your work, use your course and textbook readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Week 2 Discussion

Strategic Planning
Strategic planning is an organization’s process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy. In order to determine the direction of the organization, it is necessary to understand its current position and the possible avenues through which it can pursue a particular course of action. Describe the components of strategic planning. Explore how the healthcare manager uses the strategic planning process. Use examples to support your position.

Week 3 Discussion

Social Insurance
A program of compensation provided and controlled by a government for the elderly, the disabled, or the unemployed people is known as the social insurance program. Acceptance in a social insurance program is not guaranteed and individuals seeking to be covered have to meet certain requirements. Social insurance may come in the form of healthcare or monetary compensation. Define social insurance and describe the social insurance programs available in the U.S. Discuss how these programs affect access to care and the role the government plays in providing them

Week 4 Discussion

Diversity in Health Services

Diversity often is used in the context of legal requirements as mandated by discrimination and harassment laws, and in the past has referred to “protected classes,” such as gender, race, color and religion. In fact, diversity encompasses all of the potential differences that affect how we interpret and behave, differences that are so commonly encountered that we might fail to understand their power. It is important to take a look at how diversity impacts a growing and changing healthcare industry. Analyze three ways the growing diversity of the healthcare workforce affects the management of a healthcare organization today. How can management can enhance the use if diversity throughout the organization? Use examples in your response that show how this can happen.

Week 5 Discussion

Ethics vs. Law

Health care professionals practice in an environment that is complex, with many regulations, laws, and standards of practice. Performing an abortion is legal but may not be considered ethical by other health care professionals or members of the public at large. Other ethical dilemmas arise at the end of life, when a decision must be made to turn off life-support machines and allow death to occur. Other common ethical issues a health care professional might face are confidentiality, relationships with patients and matters related to consent, especially in the treatment of minors. Being an effective leader/manager is essential if a health care organization is to provide high-quality care and succeed financially. All healthcare leaders/managers at all levels of the healthcare organization, which depend on other people for efficient and effective work performance, require leadership ability. The quality of leadership is crucial to how work gets done in a well-managed healthcare organization. Discuss the following issues:

  • What are the differences between ethical issues and legal issues?
  • Analyze a scenario in which an issue may be unethical, but legal.
  • Analyze a scenario in which an issue may be ethical, but illegal. Explain your choices.
  • What traits and characteristics of a health care leader and/or manager are important in the steps of ethical decision-making? Why?
