Research Synthesis Instructions
This assignment will help students become familiar with reading and analyzing academic articles and offer students the opportunity to create a deeper understanding of the topic we are discussing. At the heart of any academic paper is a literature review. The purpose of the literature review is to identify and integrate previous research and provide a novel interpretation or to form new hypotheses or theory. It is not uncommon for a literature review to incorporate 20 to 30papers. For this assignment, you will be asked to write a minimal literature review based on a few articles identified by the instructor on a specific concept or topic presented in class.

  1. Choose one of the topics provided. Download and read the list of articles grouped under the selected topic.
  2. Use the library resources and find one additional article on the same topic from a peer-reviewed journal published in the last four years (see below Searching Journals).
  3. Distill all of the readings (including the article you found) into a 1-2 page synthesis paper. Please use the style guide provided and use proper citation and formatting.
  4. Include an “Annotated Bibliography” at the end of the paper.

A synthesis paper identifies key concepts and ideas that tie all the papers together. A useful synthesis can meaningfully blend the views from all the articles into a coherent conversation. The paper should provide an “at a glance” understanding of a specific consumer behavior research topic that you can later use to refresh your knowledge on the subject quickly.
