IUPUI What Are Some Motives for Conducting a Poll Discussion Questions

BIG PICTURE

Overview: You need to answer the questions in your own unique words. Then explore one of the opinion poll sites and post what you have found, answering the required questions. You must also make 4 statistically intelligent and valid comments on other people’s posts.

Read over this entire document to get the details of exactly what is required. Each article/explanation is worth up to 25 points, and each statistically intelligent comment that moves the discussion forward is worth 5 points. The whole assignment is worth 45 points.

Purpose: Political opinion polls play an increasingly significant role in the democratic process. The non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates uses them to determine which candidates can participate in televised debates. Donors use them to figure out which candidate to give money to. And voters, especially undecided ones, are often influenced by them.

At the same time there is a growing body of evidence showing that opinion polls may not always accurately reflect the electorate and sometimes have the tendency to confuse voters more than they help inform them. This project has students examine polling practices.

You will have to read what other students have posted and written in order to make sure that your posting is unique. We will check postings across sections, too, to make sure you aren’t sharing posts with students in other sections.
