RCC Boroditsky How Does Our Language Shape The Way We Think Essay
- Tips for Summary Essay
For the first major essay, make sure to do the following:- Grab your readers’ attention with a strong hook. Ask a provocative question or share an interesting fact about language in your opening sentence.
- Introduce the author’s credentials with her full name and article title in the introduction.
- End the introduction with her thesis. Begin with an attributive tag (Boroditsky argues…).
- Use tags throughout the article to remind us these ideas came from Boroditksy. Use careful language to show when you summarize the opposing view (Those who don’t believe language affects the way we think argue…). Make sure to use present tense when adding attributive tags.
- Begin body paragraph with clear topic sentences. A topic sentence should let your reader know what the main idea of that paragraph will be.
- Provide enough information so someone who hasn’t read the original article can understand the author’s argument fully.
- End body paragraphs by pointing out how the examples support or connect back to the author’s central thesis.
- Use transitions between paragraphs. Find a great resource on transitions at this site.
- Avoid second person (you) in academic writing. If you use first person, make sure it’s the plural “we” and only to indicate something all people/humans do. There should be no first person singular (“I”) in your summary.
- Do not use direct quotes in this essay! A major part of this assignment is mastering the skill of putting information into your own words. Review earlier lessons on paraphrase and summary as you draft.

- IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Please note that I do not deduct points for errors in content or grammar in the rough draft, but you should still attempt to write your draft as clearly and correctly as possible. This is an opportunity for you to make errors and receive feedback so you can improve the final draft. The rough draft is factored into your minor writing assignments grade so it does not weigh as heavily as the final draft of your essay. Make sure to review the grading rubric for the final draft as you revise.
