Pasadena City College Gene Drives Discussion

Now that you’ve learned a bit about mosquitoes as vectors and the potential of genes drives, it’s time to take a stance. We are going to use this discussion to consider the pros and cons of using gene drives to control mosquito-borne diseases.

Post Requirements:

Decide if you agree or disagree with the following statement:

Gene drives should be used to control the spread of diseases by mosquitoes.

Suggestions for formulating your opinion:

  • List the pros and cons of using gene drives in mosquitoes.
  • Use your list of pros and cons as the basis of your argument. Evaluate each item on your list and determine how you can best support and explain it — by providing concrete facts and details, adding an example, or offering evidence.

This assignment requires two posts, each completed individually.

First Post – Due Thursday

  1. Depending on your stance, title your post with “I agree” or “I disagree.” Please use a large font size for your title so that it is easy for your classmates to see.
  2. Write 6-8 sentences expressing your opinion. You may want to consider ethical and/or biological perspectives. Support your stance with information from the SoftChalk and/or credible (Links to an external site.) outside information. If you use any outside sources, be sure to cite them fully, including in-text citations and a full reference list at the end for full credit.

Second Post – Due Sunday

Choose one classmate’s post to which to respond. Try to respond to someone that hasn’t yet received a response. You will need a credible outside source (not the SoftChalk) for this post. It must be a different source from those you used in your first post.

If you agree with your classmate’s stance, find an additional credible outside source that supports this position. Write 4-6 sentences explaining what this source adds to their argument.

If you disagree with your classmate’s stance, write 4-6 sentences explaining why and bring in a credible outside source that supports your position.

Remember to cite all sources fully, including in-text citations and a full reference list at the end, for full credit.

Please remember the rules of netiquette when completing this assignment and be respectful when formulating your responses. Below are some examples of language you can use to respectfully present contrasting opinions:

  • Yes, but on the other hand…
  • That may be; however….
  • I see what you mean, but…
  • You raise an interesting point; however…
  • I agree to an extent, but…
  • Perhaps, but don’t you think…
