Cypress College Fighting Cancer & Potential Cancer Treatment Discussion
DF6-This week we’re investigating cells, cell membranes, and cell division.
One type of cell division we’re discussing is mitosis. In this type of division cells make an exact copy of themselves. When this process goes awry, and cells divide rapidly, it can cause cancer.
There are many new treatments available for cancer, and more are coming on the market each day. But I want to draw our attention to one specific method of treating cancer: using our own immune system to deliver cancer treatments directly to the cancerous cells.
Let’s look into the research Dr. Elizabeth Wayne is doing in her Ted Talk:
Prompt
In about 5-7 sentences, address at least 3 of the following questions:
- Was there anything that you’ve learned so far in this class that helped you to understand this Ted talk?
- What was your reaction to learning about this potential cancer treatment?
- Do some research on Dr. Elizabeth Wayne and the status of her research and this treatment today.
- If you could use this treatment to deliver medication that would treat another disease, what disease would it be and why?
- If you could ask Dr. Wayne about her work, what other information would you like to know?
- People undergoing treatment for cancer typically experience upset stomach, vomiting, and hair loss. Why do you think these are common side effects? (hint: think about the connection between cancer and cell division).
