There are many types of organisms found in extreme conditions here on Earth that inform our search for extraterrestrial life.

 

1. What are the key mechanisms these organisms use to survive in their extreme habitat? For example, How do they metabolize nutrients into energy and how do they “breath” (respiration)? What mechanisms do they survive extreme heat or cold or pressure or radiation?
2. At what locations have these organisms been found on Earth? Describe the location in terms of its extreme environment.
3. What other planets or moons might host similar conditions as where these organisms have been found on Earth? What evidence do we have that this is true?
