BIO 307 AU The Biology of Aging Discussion

I’m working on a biology discussion question and need support to help me learn.

This week we will take a closer look at how the immune system, and how different cells function to protect us from pathogens, and how the immune system is impacted by the aging process.

As people age, the efficiently of the immune system is reduced, making the elderly more susceptible to infections. Cancer also becomes more common as the aging immune system is less capable of detecting and destroying cancer cells.

The role of the circulatory system is to transport nutrients and waste to and from the cells in our body. The heart is a muscular pump responsible for moving blood, with dissolved substances, through the blood vessels. You will learn about the structure and function of the heart’s chambers, which consist of two atria (upper) and two ventricles (lower). The heart’s efficiency is reduced as we age, and as you may know, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States and worldwide.

It is generally agreed that immune functions decline with age, placing elders at a higheer risk of infectious diseases than the rest of the population.

1. Describe the age-associated changes in the lymphatic and immune system.

2. Describe the age-associated changes in the respiratory system. Changes in the Body with Age pages 65-68
