University Of Washington Bothell Digital Immortality & Virtual Humans Discussion

I’m working on a science discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

  1. In “The Right to Be Forgotten,” Radiolab reporter Molly Webster considers the ethics of digital memory.  After listening to this episode, what do you think: should we have the right to be forgotten online?  Why or why not?  Did you agree with the decisions that Cleveland-based editors made about un-publishing particular stories?  Why or why not?
  2. According to Maggi Savi-Baden and David Burden (see attachment), what is the difference between one-way and two-way immortality?  The authors investigate how “digital immortality appears to be changing understandings of grief and the afterlife.”  What have they found?  What is your broader reaction to this piece?
  3. Wall Street Journal reporter Joanna Stern (Links to an external site.) explores current tech offerings around digital immortality.  Do you find any of these options appealing?  Why or why not?  How might these technologies impact the grieving process?  Please cite specific examples from the video.
