Writing about scientific principles and phenomena is an increasingly important skill in the 21st century. This assignment is designed to help you understand a major concept covered in  so far while also helping you develop your science writing skills. One key to effective science writing is explaining how science can be used in everyday life. You’ll do this in a 500-600 word paper.

Here’s how to do it:

1) Select a concept or topic that has been covered in  since our previous writing assignment (e.g. Weeks 6-10) and formulate a question. Use this question as the title of your essay.

  • Sample Questions:
    • What is a t-test, and what kind of information can it give you?
    • What are the different types of graphs, and why is it important to choose the right one?

2) Write a 500-600 word essay answering this question, and discuss how the information could be useful to you in your own life. Be sure to include some concrete information that was covered in the modules, explaining why the information is relevant to your life and useful for you. Be sure to explain how the information applies to you personally and give examples.

  • Examples of applications:
    • A t-test is a type of statistical test that compares the mean of two different groups. T-tests are important in my own life because they can help me be a more informed pet owner. For example, I could read studies comparing the health scientific experimentsntly different.
    • Data can be visualized in different types of graphs, such as pie charts, bar graphs, scatter plots, and histograms. In my own life it is important for me to be able to recognize and interpret these types of graphs to be an informed consumer of news media that often presents facts and statistics in graph form.
