Section 2.2 Laboratory Procedure

Complete the following measurements as directed below, and record your values (with units) as directed in Data Table 2 and Data Table 3 of the Lab 2Worksheet:

  1. Fill the 50-mL graduated cylinder to the 10.0 mL mark with tap water. You may need to use a pipette to adjust the water level so that it is at 10.0 mL rather than 9.9 mL or 10.1 mL.
  2. Add the pre-weighed aluminum shot to the graduated cylinder. To do so, tip the cylinder to its side at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to allow the shot to slide into the cylinder without splashing or spilling any of the water.
  3. Return the cylinder to the upright position and rest it on a flat surface. Measure the new volume of the water with the aluminum shot in it. Record the measurement using the graduated cylinder to its maximum level of precision (i.e., measure using the rules of sig figs). This measurement will go in Data Table 2.
  4. Take a photo (Photo A) of the 50-mL graduated cylinder with 10.0 mL of water AND all of the aluminum shot from the packet. The graduated cylinder should be positioned to show the measurement markings on the cylinder and the water’s meniscus. In other words, the instructor should be able to verify measurement (6) in Data Table 2 by looking at the photo. Be sure to include your name and MEID in the photo.
  5. Record the mass of the aluminum shot from the pre-weighed packet in Data Table 2. IMPORTANT: Return the aluminum shot to its baggie and keep it with your lab kit. It will be used again in Lab 13.
  6. Note the masses on the pre-weighed regular and heavy-duty aluminum foil samples and record them in Data Table 3.
  7. Using the 15-cm ruler, measure the length and width of each sample of foil and record the measurements in Data Table 3. Record the measurements using the ruler to its maximum level of precision (i.e., measure using the rules of sig figs).
  8. Take a photo (Photo B) of the heavy-duty aluminum foil with the ruler positioned along its width. The ruler should be aligned with the edge of the foil so that the width measurement is visible to the instructor. The instructor should be able to verify the value in Data Table 3 by looking at your photo. Be sure to include your name and MEID in the photo.

Note that the remainder of Data Table 3 (volume and thickness) will be filled in as you work through the Lab 2 Worksheet.
