A disease is classified a a genetic disease when there is a mutation in a gene or damage to a chromosome

Provide an example of a genetic disease and explain how it meets the requirements to be labeled a genetic disease.

An example of a genetic disease is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). This disease meets the requirements because when tested for it, it is found that “gene alterations (mutations) in the SMN1 and VAPB genes cause SMA” (n.a., 2012)

A genetic disease is caused by an abnormality in someone’s genetic data. The abnormality could be a mutation of a gene or a missing/extra chromosome. A genetic disease is most often an inherited but can also be acquired through mutation.

Provide an example of a genetic disease and explain how it meets the requirements to be labeled a genetic disease.

Huntington’s Diseases is a disease that is caused by the mutation of Chromosome 4. This defect causes the production of huntingtin protein to be defected. The disease is hereditary and causes neurons to die. The symptoms are uncontrolled movements, abnormal body postures, changes in behavior, slurred speech, and difficulty eating and swallowing (Huntington’s Disease Information Page, n.d.).
