Part 1 – Due 6/29 by 11pm

Conduct some background research and then post two or more paragraphs to the forum in which you address one of the following four prompts. As always please use your subject line to indicate what topic you are engaging and if a given topic has already been presented very well by a colleague please consider choosing a different question otherwise discussion can get a little stale. 1. What is natural selection? Describe a specific example. Give two or more types of selection pressures and describe an example of how one can lead to the evolution within a species. Be as specific and detailed as possible. As always cite your sources!

2. Discuss the phenomenon of mass extinction and relate it to natural selection. Be specific and describe an example.  As always cite your sources!

3. Describe the logic of natural selection.  Although natural selection is something that can be observed and experimented with… it also follows logically from several relatively simple assumptions. Conduct independent research and describe the two or three simple conditions from which natural selection and evolution logically follows.

4. Describe artificial selection and relate it to natural selection. For instance if you wanted to breed for a certain trait in an organism of your choice how would you go about accomplishing this feat? How would your actions be similar and dissimilar to natural selection?

Part 2 – Due 7/1 by 2pm

Post a proposal (at least two paragraphs long) for a strategy to address the antibiotic or pesticide resistance you selected. Your proposal should include the following:

• A brief description of the resistance
• A brief explanation of when and how the resistance occurred
• A description of the impact of the resistance on human health
• A strategy to address the impact of the resistance, including reasons why this strategy would be useful
