A scientific report usually consists of the following sections, which you will include as separate sections with these headings in your report.  By the way, a good report is a stand alone document. Therefore, someone outside the class should be able to read your report, reproduce the experiment and obtain similar results!

Introduction – in depth discussion of background information; aim for at least a full page that is heavily cited.

  1. Hypothesis – concise, testable, verifiable, third person
  2. Materials and methods – detailed list and set of instructions
  3. Results – charts, tables, graphs and a brief description
  4. Discussion – in depth discussion of what the data means and how it is relevant
  5. Conclusion – your thoughts on improving experiment, unexpected results, etc
  6. Literature cited – minimum of 3 scholarly sources that are cited parenthetically within the text
