C. While I have never worked as a mental health professional or in the social service sector, I understand the diversity and cultural components that differs among groups and each individual.  I was reading over your articles and noticed a theme which consist of multicultural and age differences.  You continued with the issue of mental heath counseling and that of the population in South Texas.  Ones ability to connect with an individual seeking mental health services can be very difficult. Matthews et al., (2018) addresses the concept of utilizing culturally competent approaches in an effective manner.  Another component that was addressed was that of the therapeutic relationship and the awareness of power, privilege, and oppression (Matthews et al., 2018). A third component to this was that of the traditions and practices (Matthews et al., 2018).   You addressed the issue of people receiving services as well as individuals continuing services until progress is made.
QUESTION: From the perspective of a career mental health professional, when does one know the individual that they will be working with?
The initial contact between the client and the counselor is vital, to which direction one is going. If a counselor meets with someone and does not truly understand that culture, traditions or an individual, that could deter someone from coming back to seek further assistance.
QUESTION: Upon the initial contact, is it normal practice for a counselor to ask a client if there is any practices or cultural traditions that one follows to make sure that the connection is positive.
